Reiki (”Ray-Key, meaning Universal Life Energy) is one of the best known forms of energy healing which involves direct application of Chi for the purpose of strengthening the client‘s aura. Chi is the term used by the Chinese mystics and martial art practitioners for the underlying force the Universe is made of. All cultures believed that the physical universe consists of an underlying form of energy such as Prana in Indian culture, Ka in ancient Egypt, etc. Modern scientific research now comes to understand that the universe is made of energy which is affected by thought.
Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui (15th August 1865 – 9th March 1926) who is also called Usui Sensei in Japan who was an educator in Kyoto before he dedicated the rest of his life to applying and teaching Reiki. One of his students Chujiro Hayashi continued Dr. Usui’s work in Tokyo where he ran a clinic. Oneof his patients Mrs. Hawayo Takako from Hawaii came for treatments to this clinic and recovered from her severe ailments. She became his student and introduced Reiki to people outside of Japan, practising and teaching in the USA and Canada from 1937 to her death in 1980. Her grand-daughter Phyllis Furumoto now carries on her work. Many different forms of Reiki have developed out of the original “Usui System of Reiki Healing” or “Usui Shiki Ryoho” and they all have their “raison d’être”.
Dr. Usui has taken over the five admonitions to live by from the Meiji Emperor and applied them to Reiki, stating that they would “heal the body, bring peace of mind, and happiness in life”. Below are the Reiki principles as taught by the Masters of the Reiki Alliance:
- Just for today, I will not worry
- Just for today, I will not be angry
- Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly
- Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing
Reiki is a holistic therapy which means that it treats the whole person, taking into account the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions. Reiki can be used successfully for stress- and pain relief, anxiety and chakra balancing; it is very cleansing and regenerating. Reiki can relax muscles and accelerate the healing of broken bones and wounds. Reiki is also energising and there is anecdotal evidence that Reiki helps M.E. suffers to increase their typically low energy levels.
Reiki is a healing technique that is very easy to learn and to use. It is always available to us in an unlimited supply. Once we have been attuned to the energy, we will never lose it again. Reiki is safe and easy to use everywhere, anytime and in any situation. Reiki can never be used to manipulate or control. Reiki is an intelligent energy which will always go to the place where it is needed the most.
I believe in integrating Reiki into all areas of life, not only for the traditional hands-on-healing but also work on creating and maintaining harmony with everything that is. From the 2nd degree onwards it is possible to combine Reiki and Witchcraft. By this I mean to work actively on our self-development and self-improvement. As is true for “straightforward” witchcraft the same ethics apply to the combination of Reiki and Witchcraft. Saying this it must be emphasised that Reiki is NOT linked to any religion or sect, it is compatible with all religions and faiths. It does not have any dogmas, doctrines or beliefs, moreover Reiki will work if the recipient believes in it or not. It is an essential life force that is available to all of us.
The training of Reiki consists of 4 degrees:
In the first degree we are opened up as a Reiki channel and we are attuned to the energy. This degree is mainly for self-healing, the treatment of friends and family, pets and plants.
The second degree we are opened up further as a Reiki channel and we are attuned to the first three symbols and mantras. Using the first symbol we are now able to give distant healing. Using the three symbols together we can actively work on improving ourselves and our lives towards greater harmony with ourselves and the universe.
The third degree is the Master degree in which we are fully opened as a Reiki channel and attuned to the Master symbol and mantra. Our Reiki vibrations have now increased considerably and our life will change in a positive way. The third degree marks the end of our person Reiki training and from now on we are able to work with the master energy progressing on our path towards becoming a master.
The fourth degree is the teacher degree.
